tomorrow is another Hallmark Holiday which I boycot. its all about buying a card, flowers - specifically roses, chocolate, jewery and then dinner. that is what Valentines Day is about it seems. every one forgets why it even started. well here is the story:
5th Century, Rome
Mid February was traditionally the time of the Lupercian festival, an ode to the God of fertility and a celebration of sensual pleasure, a time to meet and court a prospective mate. In AD 496, Pope Gelasius outlawed the pagan festival. But he was clever to replace it with a similar celebration, although one deemed morally suitable. He needed a "lovers" saint to replace the pagan deity Lupercus.
The martyred Bishop Valentine was chosen as the patron saint of the new festival.
Saint Valentine had been beheaded for helping young lovers marry against the wishes of the mad emperor Claudius. Before execution, Valentine himself had fallen in love with his jailer's daughter. He signed his final note to her, "From Your Valentine", a phrase that has lasted through the centuries.
Pope Gelasius didn't get everything he wanted. The pagan festival died out, it is true, but he had further hoped people would emulate the lives of saints. Instead they latched onto the more romantic aspect of Saint Valentines religious life. While not immediately as popular as the more passionate pagan festival, eventually the concept of celebrating true love became known as Valentine's Day.
part of my dislike for this so called holiday is cause of all the horrible Valentines Days I've had in the past. it started my junior year of high school, when the jerk I dated on and off through high school asked me back out on Valentines Day! then the after we break up that following Valentines day the guy who I was dating at that time yeah well he didn't think out his plans for it and tried to do everything last minute and it ended up being horrible, we ended up renting a movie and eatting pizza, which I wouldn't have minded if he hadn't tried to take me out to dinner at 5 different resturants with out making reservations. so yeah that was a crappy one. then the 1st one I spent with Clay was fine, we spent the night talking on the phone to each other. then last year we got engaged on that day after he took me out to dinner it was a good day... but it ended in May when we offically broke up.
this year I was hoping I would have been able to spend it with Jeremy... but no he's still deployed... which I understand it's his job... but at the same time it's hard. I haven't seen him for sooo long...
I get to spend tomorrow student teaching... fun fun fun... went to the Auto Show yesterday... had a good time.. saw Dean there with his car lol yeah they asked him to bring his car to display *grins*
